Thoughts written here are not conclusions. I have many questions and few answers. Thoughts which differ from the ones I have expressed are welcome.

Reality
(Inspired by a friend's post.) Adara knows, intellectually, that monsters aren't real. But she's still afraid of them. And she knows that toys aren't real because they can't talk, but cartoons can, so that makes them real, right?
When I was 6, my family went to Disneyland (my first time). My 14-year-old brother took me on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride (pre-Jack Sparrow, obviously) and I had real fear issues. I was too old to scream or cry, but I gripped the safety bar for all I was worth. Those automatons seemed so REAL! And yet I was old enough to know they couldn't just stand their all day if they were people. I wrestled with the two concepts back and forth in my mind for months afterwards, and to this very day I tend to get a bit spooked by overly-lifelike mannequins. My sympathies to Adara with her confusion.
I guess we all suffer from these things. I still hate to be in front of a mirror when the lights are out, because of the ghost stories of my youth. Some things just stay with you, even though you're rational enough to know better.
